The 7 Most Common Charts on the IELTS

In the IELTS Task 1 Writing exam, you must write about a chart. There are 7 types of charts that you could get on the Task 1 exam:

  1. line graph
  2. bar chart
  3. pie chart
  4. table
  5. flow chart
  6. diagram
  7. map

One chart on the Task 1 exam tells about ONLY ONE of the two following:

A – What is happening at one moment only, for example:

Pie Chart - ielts blog - grains and seeds

B – What is happening in a period of time, for example:

Ielts blog - line graph - coal

On the Task 1 exam, you could get one chart, two charts or even three charts. You may get one of the following:

I – ONE CHART

A – One chart that tells what is happening at one moment. OR

B – One chart that tells what is happening in a period of time.

II – TWO CHARTS

A – A chart that tells you what is happening at one moment AND

B – A chart that tells what is happening in a period of time.

III – TWO CHARTS

You may get two charts that tell what is happening at two moments in time. Then you describe the changes in the two charts.

IV – THREE CHARTS

You may get three charts that tell three different things. They could from any of the 7 kinds of charts from above.

Here are three examples:

  1. Two tables that tell what is happening at two moments in time and a map
  2. Three pie charts that tell what is happening at three moments in time, and you describe the changes
  3. A bar chart, pie chart and a line graph, for example:

b – if the chart tells about one moment in time OR a period of time

ANSWERS

1 – line graph – a period of time

2 – diagram – one moment of time

3 – flow chart – a period of time

4 – map – one moment of time

5 – pie chart – one moment of time

6 – bar chart – one moment of time OR a period of time  (This bar chart tells what is happening )

7 – table – one moment of time or a period of time
