How to Use Examples on Your IELTS Essay

When writing an IELTS essay, you need to give examples to support what you say. Your examples must be related to the topic sentence.

Here are two ways to give examples.

Writing ONE example

  • Mothers who work outside the home face many challenges. For example, they must learn to balance home life and work life. A mother may bring work home with her, only to find that her child is sick or needs help with homework.

Writing TWO examples

  • Children gain many benefits from learning a foreign language at an early age. For instance, they will have many years to learn a new language. By the time they are in their teens, they will be very familiar with the language. Also, children are more likely to develop a love for the language at an early age because they learned it in a fun way. This will reduce their resistance to learning a new language.

Recycling involves cost and effort. The cost and effort of recycling are not worth the results. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Recycling has become an important part of waste management systems in many areas, and (1) _____ cities have recycling programs in place. Modern technologies have enabled us to recycle a wide range of products including paper, plastic, and metals. However, people’s opinions (2) _____ when it comes to the net gains of recycling.

Proponents of recycling are well aware of its many (3) _____. For instance, when we use what is already available, we (4) _____ fewer natural resources such as oil, coal and water. When we reuse something as it is, such as a container, recycling is virtually (5) _____. In addition, recycling old paper into new paper (6) _____ the burden on the environment and saves trees. Reusing what we have also reduces the volume of our landfills. It is quite evident that recycling is a valuable way to conserve our natural resources.
