Prince Edward made Duke of Edinburgh by King Charles on his 59th birthday

On his 59th birthday, King Charles III is celebrating his brother, Prince Edward, in a significant way. The 74-year-old British monarch marked Prince Edward’s birthday on March 10 by conferring upon him the title of Duke of Edinburgh. The announcement was made on the royal family’s website.

The statement released on the website reads, “His Majesty The King has been pleased to confer the Dukedom of Edinburgh upon The Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and Forfar on the occasion of His Royal Highness’s 59th birthday.”

This move comes two years after the passing of Prince Philip, the previous Duke of Edinburgh, who held the title for almost six decades. Prince Edward’s wife, Sophie, has also been named the Duchess of Edinburgh. The couple is honored to continue the work of Prince Philip, who passed away in April 2021, followed by Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.

The Earldom of Forfar will remain with the new Duke of Edinburgh for his lifetime, and he will use the Dukedom of Edinburgh as it is the more senior Scottish title.
