George Jung’s Wealth

George Jung’s current net worth is $10,000

George Jung: A Brief Biography

George Jacob Jung, also known as Boston George and El Americano, was born on 6 August 1942, in Boston, Massachusetts USA. He gained notoriety for his involvement in drug trafficking and smuggling, particularly as one of the most significant cocaine smugglers in the United States during the 1970s and 80s. His life story was portrayed in the film “Blow” starring Johnny Depp.

Reports indicate that George Jung’s fortune is estimated to be at least $10,000, primarily accumulated during his drug smuggling days, where he earned millions in single runs. Despite facing numerous legal issues and arrests, he managed to preserve a substantial portion of his wealth.

Initially a standout football player at Weymouth High School, Jung later pursued advertising studies at the University of Southern Mississippi. It was during this period that he began dealing marijuana, initially selling enough to cover his expenses. Without completing his degree, he moved to California in 1967, recognizing the business potential due to lower marijuana prices compared to New England. Using his girlfriend, who was a stewardess, to transport drugs in her luggage, he initiated his marijuana smuggling operations. At that time, airport security checks were lax, particularly for airport personnel, enabling him to succeed and increase his net worth. Eventually expanding his operations, he found a marijuana supplier in Mexico. He reportedly made around $250,000 per month during this period, equivalent to approximately $1.5 million today. However, he was apprehended in 1974 while waiting for a contact, with 660 pounds of marijuana in his possession.

While serving time at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Jung met Carlos Lehder Rivas, who introduced him to the Medellin Cartel and their cocaine operations in Colombia. Jung provided Lehder with knowledge on smuggling, leading them to start smuggling cocaine into the United States. By the 70s and 80s, they were responsible for around 85% of the cocaine found in the country, accumulating substantial wealth, such as earning $15 million in a single operation. In 1987, Jung was betrayed by Lehder and arrested, but managed to flee while on bail.

Despite attempting conventional employment, Jung eventually returned to smuggling. In 1994, his arrest with 1754 pounds of cocaine led to a 60-year prison sentence, which he later reduced by testifying against Lehder. Jung was released from prison in June 2014.

Besides inspiring the movie “Blow,” Jung contributed to “Heavy,” a purportedly fictional work detailing his escape from a Cuban prison to Guatemala. He has a family, including a Colombian wife and a daughter, although most personal details have been altered for the safety of those involved.
