Heartbreaking tale of a Dog Owner Losing her French Bulldog to Toxic Houseplant
Sharing her harrowing experience on Facebook, a woman recounted the tragic death of her French Bulldog after consuming a common houseplant, the sago palm.
The sago palm, often featured as bonsai-style houseplants despite being naturally found in tropical settings, contains cycasin, a substance known to cause severe liver failure in both cats and dogs, making it highly toxic to them.

As narrated by Kate Wagner, her dog ingested some leaves from a sago palm, also known as cycas revoluta plant or cardboard palm, which led to a distressing sequence of events. Despite extensive and costly treatment, including the use of a feeding tube and strict medication, her dog Lily tragically passed away in Kate’s arms on Saturday, 16th May.

Kate Wagner took to Facebook to alert fellow dog owners about the hazards posed by this common houseplant: ‘This will be a very hard story to share, but I believe it’s essential to impart this information. The past week has been a tremendously tough journey for us.
‘Our beloved Lily got into one of my houseplants, leading to a week-long battle for her life at the emergency vet. She now has a feeding tube and a demanding medication schedule from 7 AM to 12 AM daily. There have been numerous tears, significant expenses, and overwhelming guilt… all because of a $5 plant. ‘I want to raise awareness about this houseplant because when I bought it from a major garden center last summer, I had no clue that this tiny 6-inch plant would become a nightmare. ‘The Sago Palm is a common household and landscaping plant native to tropical regions. All parts of the plants are highly toxic to humans and animals, inducing liver failure and even death with minimal exposure. This includes the trunk, roots, leaves, and small berry-like seeds that can appear on mature plants.
After gaining 240,000 shares, Kate updated her followers that Lily had passed away.
‘On Saturday, 16th May, Lily passed away in our arms,’ wrote Kate. ‘She fought valiantly, loved immensely, and even managed a couple of tail wags just before she could no longer fight. ‘We cherished her deeply and provided her with all the love and care throughout the weeks following the incident. We are utterly shattered. ‘For all the houseplant enthusiasts, I urge you to research your houseplants before purchasing them. Even if you believe the house plant is in a secure spot, mischievous little paws can still find trouble. ‘Please feel free to share this story. You might just save a life.’’
