Jim Morris was raised by his mother, Olline Morris, and his father, Jim Morris, Sr., who was a recruiter for the US Navy. He began playing baseball at the age of three. Morris was selected 466th in the first round of the 1982 amateur baseball draft by the New York Yankees, but he chose to advance his education first and did not sign. Later on, he suffered several arm injuries while playing in the minor leagues, which prevented him from progressing further. He signed with the Chicago White Sox in 1989 but was again unable to advance further than the single-A leagues.

Unable to make it to the Major League, Jim decided to retire. After retiring, he earned his college degree and started working at Reagan County High School in Big Lake, Texas as a physical science teacher and baseball coach of the Reagan County Owls.

#Fact
1On September 18, 1999, he became one of the oldest players (age 35) ever to debut in a major league baseball game when he pitched in the eighth inning of a Devil Ray’s game against the Texas Rangers. He struck out Rangers’ shortstop Royce Clayton on four pitches for the final out of the inning. Ironically, Clayton made a cameo in “The Rookie”, which depicted Morris’ rise to the majors, and again was Morris’ first major league strikeout victim, this time with Morris being portrayed by Dennis Quaid. (The oldest was Diomedes Olivo who was 41 when he debuted for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1960.)
