His involvement as the sports director and later the news director at Channel 22 led to his employment by the New England Whalers ice hockey team as communications director in 1974.
In 1978, Rasmussen came up with the idea of an all-sports cable TV network, which later evolved into ESPN with an initial investment of $9,000. This marked the beginning of his journey to success.

Rasmussen’s significant contributions include creating a sports news television program called “Sports Center” and securing the rights to broadcast their “March Madness” college basketball coverage.
