Delta Youths Receive Warning about the Perils of Irregular Migration

Delta State’s youth population has been emphatically cautioned on the hazards of irregular migration at a one-day engagement summit organized to commemorate the 2023 International Day of Migrants (IDM) in Asaba, the capital of Delta State.

The message was delivered by Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Mr. Omamuzo Erebe, who was represented by Mrs. Juliet Ojefia, the Director of Peoples Right Department. She emphasized the necessity for concerted efforts in combatting irregular migration and educating youths about its risks and the correct procedures for migration.

Addressing the theme ‘Safe and Orderly Migration, What You Need to Know, Have and Do’, Mrs. Ojefia stressed the importance of informing youths about the dangers of irregular migration and the proper processes to be followed if they intend to migrate.

Mrs. Ijeoma Nwanze, the Coordinator of the Taskforce on Irregular Migration, highlighted that the stakeholders’ engagement summit was specifically aimed at the youth demographic. She pointed out that the summit sought to raise awareness of the rights of migrants, the ramifications and hazards of irregular migration, and the importance of practicing safe and orderly migration.

Mrs. Nwanze further mentioned the establishment of the Taskforce on Irregular Migration by the previous administration in response to alarming reports of widespread irregular trafficking of Deltans. She emphasized that one of their core mandates was to raise awareness among the public, particularly the youth who are the primary targets of smugglers.

Encouraging prospective migrants, Mrs. Nwanze advised that if they choose to travel abroad, they should do so through legitimate channels by seeking beneficial information. She underscored that many individuals have fallen victim to irregular migration due to ignorance.
