FG promises 1m low-cost houses for poor Nigerians

The Federal Government has assured the public of its plan to deliver one million low-cost housing units for the most vulnerable members of the population within a span of seven years. This was revealed by Mrs Chidimma Makuachukwu, the National Programme Manager for Renewed Hope Shelter for the Poor, IDP, and Refugees, at the Sixth Nigeria Affordable Housing Finance and Innovation Summit (NAHFIS Expo 2023) held in Abuja on Tuesday.

During the summit, she emphasized that the Federal Government will work in collaboration with state and local governments to obtain the necessary lands for the construction of the housing units. Additionally, she mentioned that the project aims to extend its reach to all states in Nigeria by the year 2024.

In outlining the approach, Makuachukwu stated, “We are working with the state government in conjunction with the local authorities to obtain land. Currently, we are active in Benue. Our objective is to resettle the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to their original homes with the support of state and local authorities. Local labor and content will be utilized to empower the local economies.”

Highlighting the inclusive nature of the initiative, she clarified, “There is no selection process in this; it is about the vulnerable states across the Federation.”
