Dr. Michael Umoh: LUTH Denies 72-Hour Call Shift, Says Rumor

The Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, has dismissed rumors of the death of Dr. Michael Umoh, one of its house officers, due to a 72-hour call shift. The hospital’s management released a statement on Thursday in Lagos, stating that Dr. Umoh was a hardworking and promising young man, and that his colleagues would miss him.

The management emphasized that the family of Dr. Umoh is mourning and requested privacy. They clarified that Dr. Umoh passed away on September 17 while at church with his parents, and refuted the claim of a 72-hour non-stop shift leading to his death.

The hospital’s Neurosurgery unit’s records show that Dr. Umoh was on call on September 13 and 14, and he was not on call on September 15, 16, and 17 (the day he passed away). The statement also mentioned that prior to this time, he was on call on September 7 and 8, totaling four days of being on call in September 2023.

A delegation from LUTH visited the family to offer condolences and gather more information about the circumstances of Dr. Umoh’s death. The hospital requested respect for the family’s privacy and expressed their condolences, wishing for Dr. Umoh’s soul to rest in peace and for the family to find strength in this difficult time.
