The IELTS Writing tips are aimed at helping students know what to expect from their writing examination and also give you in-depth knowledge in form of tips on how to navigate the questions much easier.
Both the Academic and General Writing tests consist of two writing tasks of 150 words and 250 words
IELTS Wrting Tips for Academic Writing Task 1
IELTS Writing Tips on how to answer IELTS Academic Task 1?
1) Analyse the graph
Firstly, you need to get an overview of the graph/chart/diagram you will describe. Look for general trends, changes and key features to get an idea of how you will structure the information.
2) Use structure below to writre your answers:
Once you’ve thought out all patterns on the graph, you can start writing your answer.
Introduction | Introduce the graph (ideally 1-2 sentences). | |

General overview | In this paragraph you should describe main trends. | |
Specific features | Group the given data by some feature. Then describe each feature.
Use paragraphing! Usually, there should be 1-3 paragraphs in the body part. |
IELTS Wrting Tips for General Writing Task 1
In this task you will be presented with a scenerio and asked to write a letter requesting for certain information or situation.

Once you have thought out your responses to answer, use the following structure below:
First paragraph | Briefly give reasons for writing a letter. | |
Middle | Issue 1 | Write about each issue you were given in a task. |
Issue 2 | ||
Issue 3 | ||
Last paragraph | Write a polite letter closing. |
IELTS Writing Tips for task 2 – Essay
1) Determine your opinion on the topic
Usually, IELTS essay is one of the following types:
- Giving your opinion
- Agree/disagree
- Suggesting a solution
- Pros and cons
Depending on the topic, decide what is your opinion on it and why. Have a clear position, don’t hesitate between two opinions! Then find examples you will use for this task. You should spend a few minutes on planning.
2) Write an answer using the following structure:
Introduction |
Paraphrase the topic and briefly give your opinion. |
Body |
Develop your point, giving reasons and supporting them with appropriate examples. Write at least 2 and no more than 5 paragraphs. |
Conclusion |
Sum up what you have written and give your final thoughts on the problem. They should not differ from those in the introduction. |
3) Style your essay
Use various words and structures, linking devices and avoid repetition.
Use some words from academic word list .
Do not use informal style and avoid irrelevant information, you will receive less points for your work.
Also, don’t forget to write at least 250 words, writing less will affect your mark negatively. You should aim at 260-280 words. You won’t get more points for a longer essay.
